Thibaut Courtois, the goalkeeper for Real Madrid, criticized Barcelona for leaving the Copa Del Rey and the Champions League early this year.
When questioned about the disparity between Real Madrid and Barcelona in the LaLiga standings, the Belgian responded that certain teams “only play from Saturday to Saturday.”
With nine games remaining before the completion of the domestic season, Barca leads the LaLiga standings by 11 points.
The Catalans, however, were eliminated from the Champions League in the group stage after failing to advance past Viktoria Plzen and quarterfinalists Bayern Munich and Inter Milan in Group C.
Xavi’s team was then knocked out of the Copa Del Rey in two games by Real Madrid in the semi-final, which concluded 4-1 on aggregate despite Barcelona holding a 1-0 lead going into the second leg.
Courtois criticized Barcelona for their early departures from the Spanish and European cups after Real Madrid’s 2-0 league win over Cadiz on Saturday evening.
‘There is a big gap in points with Barcelona,’ he admitted. ‘However, we still have the Copa del Rey final versus Osasuna, which we play over the week. Others are only available from Saturday to Saturday.
Real Madrid tightened the gap on Barcelona after the Blaugrana drew 0-0 with Getafe, while Los Blancos won on the road against Cadiz.
‘We played a terrific game,’ Courtois said after the encounter. We had many chances until the first goal, but David Gil played well.
‘They had a chance to hold out for a draw, but we controlled the game. We could have scored more goals, but I’m hoping we preserved them for Tuesday.’
On Tuesday evening, Real Madrid will meet Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at Stamford Bridge.
The reigning Champions lead the return encounter 2-0, having defeated Frank Lampard’s team at the Santiago Bernabeu last Wednesday.
