David De Gea on the Verge of Finalizing Contract Extension with Manchester United

Manchester United is close to reaching an agreement with their long-serving goalkeeper, David De Gea, on a new contract with reduced terms.
The 32-year-old Spaniard has been in negotiations with the club since last year, as his current contract is set to expire at the end of this season.
Although United has the option to activate an automatic one-year extension on his current terms, they have been seeking to agree on a wage reduction with De Gea, who is currently the highest-paid player on the team.
The club has been trying to address its wage structure, and De Gea has now agreed to take a substantial pay cut to extend his stay at Old Trafford.
The length of the contract and other add-ons have been discussed, but according to 90min’s sources, there are no significant obstacles left, and only minor details need to be worked out.
Manchester United’s manager Erik ten Hag has expressed to the club’s hierarchy that a new deal for David De Gea is the best option at present.
The team’s focus is on strengthening other areas of the squad for the upcoming season, and a new starting goalkeeper is not seen as a priority.
However, sources suggest that signing a goalkeeper to provide more substantial competition for De Gea remains a possibility in 2023.
Despite some difficult moments this season, including a Europa League defeat against Sevilla, De Gea leads the Premier League’s clean sheet table and has received public backing from his manager on several occasions.
Ten Hag considers De Gea to be a key figure in the dressing room and one of his most trusted senior players.
Following the Europa League loss, De Gea responded with an outstanding performance in the FA Cup semi-final victory over Brighton, earning praise from the United boss.
De Gea himself has expressed his desire to stay at United beyond this season, citing the club’s strong mix of talent and experience as a reason for his enjoyment.
“The team is united in their approach, with a shared playing style and mindset, The collective spirit is strong, with every player fighting until the final whistle and those on the bench ready to make an impact, It’s a pleasure to witness the team play and excel together.”
