Eriksen has returned to Manchester United training after being out since January

Christian Eriksen has returned to first-team training after missing the previous two months due to injury.

Manchester United’s midfielder has been sidelined since sustaining a heavy tackle from Andy Carroll in their FA Cup victory over Reading.

With ankle ligament damage, the Dane was initially ruled out until the end of April, but he has made good progress and has been spotted back in first team training.

Erik ten Hag revealed on Tuesday that Eriksen was nearing match fitness, but he was not risked for United’s 1-0 win over Brentford on Wednesday night.

His return comes at an ideal time for the Red Devils, who are fighting for fourth place with 10 league games remaining.

They will be without Casemiro for one more game following his four-match suspension for receiving a red card against Southampton, but they may be able to field a full-strength midfield against Nottingham Forest on April 16.

United have had a turbulent few days, with some questioning their ability to finish in the top four this season following a disappointing loss to Newcastle at the weekend.

They looked to be back on track as they defeated Brentford thanks to a Marcus Rashford goal, moving them three points clear of fifth-place Tottenham with a game in hand.

‘There was passion and desire that was missing on Sunday, and we got over the line,’ Ten Hag said after the game.

‘Mistakes can occur when you lose focus. We want to play as a machine, making no mistakes. We made one mistake, which fortunately did not benefit them.

‘We are not where I want us to be. Sunday was not an option. This is not United, and it does not meet our standards. There is a certain mentality that must be present, and when one or two [players] fail to do so, you have a problem.

‘We had to recover, and we did. I was impressed with how we played in the first half against a very tough opponent – especially against top teams.’

United will play Everton in an early kickoff on Saturday before facing Sevilla in the first leg of their Europa League quarter final next Thursday.
