Man United Target Frimpong Admits Uncertainty Over Future Decision

Jeremie Frimpong, a Man United target, has hinted at a summer move to Old Trafford by admitting his future at Bayer Leverkusen is uncertain.
The right-back began his career in Manchester City’s youth system before moving to Celtic without ever appearing in a first-team match for City.
After two seasons in Scotland, the Dutchman joined Leverkusen in the January transfer window of 2021, and his performances in the Bundesliga this season have Frimpong linked with a move to Manchester United for next season.
After Thursday night’s Europa League tie with Union Saint-Gilloise, Sport 1 queried the attack-minded full-back about his future, and Frimpong hinted at a return to Manchester.
‘I’m not sure when I’ll make a decision about my future. I’m only thinking on Leverkusen and the upcoming games.’ Frimpong explained.
This season, the 22-year-old has made 35 starts for the German club, scoring eight goals in the Bundesliga during an excellent campaign.
He has yet to earn a full international cap for his country, but he was a member of Louis van Gaal’s Netherlands team for the World Cup last winter. Frimpong did not play, however, as the Dutch were eliminated in the quarter-finals by eventual winners Argentina.
Since taking over from Van Gaal, Ronald Koeman has also neglected the defender, questioning his suitability as a right-back in his Dutch team.
‘There’s no Frimpong? This is due to the system in which we play,’ Koeman explained last month.
‘He virtually plays as a right winger. In the first place, my right back should be able to defend properly, but I have serious reservations.’
Frimpong had a great tenure in Scotland, winning the Scottish triple and being named Celtic’s Young Player of the Year in 2020.
If he joins United, he will compete for the right-back spot alongside Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot, both of whom have been linked with moves away from Old Trafford as Erik ten Hag plots a summer squad makeover.
Frimpong isn’t the only right-back linked to United. Denzil Dumfries, a fellow Dutchman presently playing for Inter Milan, is also being pursued.
Dumfries wants to leave Serie A at the conclusion of the season and is thought to prefer a move to the Premier League, with Chelsea also interested.
