Manchester United may be having their most successful season in 10 years but plans are well underway to strengthen the squad for the post-season.
Erik ten Hag insists Manchester United are “working hard” in the summer transfer window to improve the squad for next season.
United have already ended their trophy drought, are in the Europa League quarter-finals and the FA Cup semi-finals, and could return to third place in the Premier League on Saturday.
The club has prioritized the recruitment of a new striker, with Tottenham talisman Harry Kane Ten Hag being the preferred candidate. Ten Hag is also interested in bringing in a younger midfielder and would support a second approach for Frenkie de Jong.
United expects more outgoings than incomings, with player sales helping to fund reinvestment in the team. United intends to sell Harry Maguire, Alex Telles, Brandon Williams, and Anthony Martial.
Ten Hag stated in midweek that United require two players who can score more than 15 goals in a season. Marcus Rashford leads United in scoring with 28 goals, more than doubling second-placed Bruno Fernandes’ tally of 10, and two United players have broken the 20-goal barrier in only four seasons over the last 15 years.
“We’re working hard behind the scenes to get more players scoring,” Ten Hag explained, “but we also need to develop the team and our attacking play so that more players can come into areas where they can score goals.”
“I believe we have the ability. I must emphasize that Jason Sancho, Bruno Fernandes, Marcel Sabitzer, and Antony are all capable of scoring goals. The good news is that Anthony Martial is getting fitter and fitter, and when he returns, he will undoubtedly score goals, so we already have two players capable of scoring 15 goals or more.
“You should always strive to improve your playing style. We are now in the final stage, with only two months to go, so keep working to improve your game before taking the next step.
“The summer will arrive, and as I previously stated, we will be working in the background. However, it is not the focus at this time. It’s right now. We are in the right place, competing for the top four spots in the Premier League, the Europa League quarter-finals, and the FA Cup semi-finals.
“We’ve already won a cup, so we need to make this season a huge success.” We have a fantastic squad, so I am confident of a strong finish to the season and even more silverware.”
