Messi and Argentina’s World Cup Team Crowned Winners of 2023 Laureus Sports Awards

Lionel Messi and the Argentina national football team have been named Sportsman and Team of the Year respectively at the 2023 Laureus World Sports Awards.

Messi led his country to victory in the 2022 World Cup, scoring seven goals and earning the Golden Ball award for best player of the tournament.

This marks the first time that an athlete has won both the individual and team awards in the same year.

Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce was named Sportswoman of the Year, having won her fifth gold medal in the women’s 100m at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.

Other award winners included Christian Eriksen for Comeback of the Year and Carlos Alcaraz for World Breakthrough of the Year.

The awards were voted on by members of the Laureus Academy, which is made up of sporting legends from around the world.
